The Katikati School roll of honour, in the school hall, lists one name from the South African War (‘King’s Sergt. Fred. W. Wylie’), ten names from the First World War, and ten names from the Second. Some of these names, but not all of them, also appear on the roll of honour on the Katikati First World War memorial gates and the Katikati War Memorial Hall.
Perhaps the best-known name is that of Sergeant David Gallaher, who attended Katikati No. 2 School from 1879 to 1887. Gallaher was later captain of the successful All Black team that toured the British Isles in 1905. He served in both the South African War and the First World War, being killed at Passchendaele in Belgium on 4 October 1917. The school has erected a commemorative mural.
