Victoria Cross winner James Ward, circa 1941. The Whanganui schoolteacher won his VC during a bombing raid over Germany on 7 July 1941. When his aircraft was set on fire, Ward crawled out onto the wing, several thousand feet in the air, and attempted to smother the flames. The damaged bomber made it back to base. Sadly, Ward was killed on another raid two months later.
