I disagree with both the claims above.
Uncle Jim or James Clendon Henare is no relation to the Clendons. He was named after the treaty signatory. He is distantly related to both Pomare and Waka Nene. James Henare links to Te Ruki Kawiti arch rival of Waka Nene and Pomare. James Henare is of the Ngati Hine subtribe of Ngapuhi, the subtribe who sacked Russell during the raids of the 19th century. James Henare is directly linked to Colonel Henry Wynyard who was the Gov. General for some time in the 1850s

re 12 and 13 May 2009 Tau Henare PM is descended from Gov Wynyard not R R Clendon - data in Wikipedia confirms this. His ancestors may well have been related to Jane Cochrane however as she was of Napuphi desecnt and related to Pomare 11 and Tamiti Waka Nene. D T Clendon is a descendant of Clendon's.

Yesterday I wrote: "James Clendon Tau Henare is related to both National MP Tau Henare and Green MP-in-waiting David James Clendon." Further to this, the common ancestors of all three men are: - James Reddy Clendon (1800 - 1872) ship's captain and signatory to The Treaty of Waitangi - Jane Takotowi Cochrane (1838 - 1919) of Rawene
