Like all Royal Navy warships of the time, HMS Philomel had its own mascots. Military mascots were animals kept by the armed forces for ceremonial purposes, as emblems of particular units or simply for companionship.
This bulldog, a typically English breed pictured here with a pipe and sailor's hat, was the ship's mascot in 1914. Click on the thumbnail to view a photo of some of Philomel's other mascots at Muscat in 1916.
