The German auxiliary cruiser (converted freighter) SMS Wolf, which in 1917 seized and sank two ships near the Kermadec Islands and laid mines off the New Zealand coast that later claimed two more vessels. In the worst incident, 26 lives were lost on 26 June 1918 when the trans-Tasman liner Wimmera struck a mine and sank off Cape Maria Van Diemen in the Far North.
