Final leave

By 1917 the Defence Department was encouraging family members to say goodbye to soldiers when they came home on final leave, rather than attempting to see them off at the wharf as they left the country. It scheduled this leave as close as possible to their departure date. This touching scene, captioned ‘Final Leave’, appeared in the Auckland Weekly News in June 1918.
