Canterbury artist and teacher Colin Lovell-Smith served as a sapper with the Royal New Zealand Engineers during the First World War. Following Gallipoli, he was posted to a British Corps of Royal Engineers unit on the Salonika front in early 1916, where he helped survey and map the region. For this work, Lovell-Smith was awarded the White Eagle of Serbia.
