Boys playing cricket, about 1896

Boys play cricket on a country road (probably Dobson on the West Coast).

The painting is titled Young New Zealand at play; cricket in a mining town. It appeared in the Weekly Press, 28 October 1899 and was probably painted in 1896.

Hi Bill The short answer really is still 'Ask your local librarian'! We suggest asking David Verran at Auckland City Library if he knows of any records of the club (there doesn't seem to be one with this name any more, but there is or was an Onehunga Workingmen's Cricket Club). And there's a centennial history of the Akld Cricket Assn, 100 Not Out. If you have any dates of games he may have played in you could also check local newspapers for that time. Jamie Mackay
