On 26 October 1913, strikers and their supporters, led by the watersiders’ band, marched from Post Office Square to the Basin Reserve. Finding the gates locked, they broke them down and held a mass meeting in the reserve.  Among the strike leaders who addressed the crowd that day were Harry Holland, editor of the Maoriland Worker, and Tom Young, president of the United Federation of Labour and secretary of the seamen’s union. Both men were later arrested for the speeches they made that day.
