Arm badges for men exempted from war service

From early 1916, men who had enlisted for, or been discharged or exempted from, military service were required to wear armbands in public to distinguish them from ‘shirkers’ who had yet to enlist. Police powers to stop men of military age and demand to see their credentials increased as the war progressed.
