Nelson's quota of men for the 39th Reinforcements are farewelled at the city's port on 5 March 1918 as they embark for training at Trentham. The 39ths left New Zealand in June 1918, but thanks to a happy accident at sea hardly any of them had arrived in France when the armistice was signed.
