The 1st New Zealand Stationary Hospital was dispatched to Salonika from Egypt in October 1915. During the transfer, the troopship (Marquette) carrying the New Zealanders was torpedoed by a German submarine; 167 lost their lives, including 22 New Zealand medical orderlies and ten nurses. The survivors established a tent hospital at Salonika in which they treated cases of frostbite, typhoid and dysentery until March 1916, when they left for France.
