Meaning of place name
When the Northcote Land Company acquired property for subdivision here in the early 1880s, the company gave the name because of a similarity to the bay of St Heliers in Jersey, Channel Islands. Settlers had earlier referred to it as Glen Orchard and Goodfellow's Beach. Maori name: Whanganui; whanga: bay, nui: large.
