Meaning of place name
A tidal river that flows through Silverdale village was named Te Weiti (te: the, we: water; iti: little) by the Maori who used it as a waterway. An alternative translation is te: the; wei: water; ti: cabbage tree. In the late 1820s or early 1830s the first Europeans in the district corrupted the name to The Wade. As the area became established by farmers and orchardists, the need was felt for a new name. A public meeting was held in 1911 rejected such names as New Jerusalem and Mud-dale, and selected Silverdale, possibly because of the silver poplars in the area.
