hikutaia

Farming township on the Hauraki Plains on the banks of the Hikutaia River. This was the only area in which Captain James Cook made any inland exploration. On 20 November 1769 he made a boat journey up the Waihou (Thames) River and landed on the west bank near here to inspect a kauri tree.

Meaning of place name
Lit: tail of the tide, or neap tide.
