Clifden (14 km north of Tūātapere) is best known for its long suspension bridge, built in 1899 to open up land for settlement west of the Waiau River. Limestone caves and Māori rock drawings are local features.

Meaning of place name
In 1861 a settler, Robert Walter Aitken, who came from Tasmania took up a run which he called Clifden on account of its limestone cliffs.
