The old Auckland suburb of Avondale is known for its racecourse and large industrial park. From the 1980s many Māori and Pacific Island people settled in the community. It was a separate borough until 1927 when it was incorporated into Auckland City.

Meaning of place name
Named after Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale, the eldest son of Edward VII. Māori name is 'Whau' - a native plant - and is preserved in the name of the Whau River.
