Named after Alfriston, 'Aelfric's village' in Sussex, birthplace of Dr George Edward Bodle, one of the earliest settlers in the area. Aelfric (c955-1020) was an Old English prose writer who became a priest and taught at Cernel Monastery (now Cerne Abbas) in Dorset.
