5. Tauranga Treaty Copy

A treaty copy had been received by the CMS missionary, A. N. Brown, at Tauranga by 1 April 1840. The area was troubled by inter-tribal fighting and Brown hesitated to raise the matter with local chiefs. On 10 April, however, several missionaries gathered for a meeting and that day, or in the weeks following, twenty-one Tauranga chiefs signed.

Tupaea and some other Otumoetai chiefs would not sign, and Brown put the copy aside, possibly hoping that they might do so later. The copy was finally sent back to Hobson on 23 May.

Most of the treaty signings were witnessed by Europeans. This one, however, was witnessed by Hoani Aneta, who also signed; he was Brown's mission assistant.

With each name are the words 'tana tohu' - his mark (or sign).
