Hobson suffered a stroke on 1 March when at the Waitemata harbour and returned to the Bay of Islands where he made a gradual recovery. Responsibility for furthering treaty business was taken up by Willoughby Shortland. Copies of the treaty were made and were dispatched from the Bay of Islands. There is no record of the number copies made.
On 13 March Shortland sent this copy, under his own signature, to Captain W. C. Symonds to obtain signatures in the Manukau harbour area and in districts south of it on the west coast. Symonds was an unattached British army officer; he was working in the area on behalf of a proposed Scottish land company settlement. With James Hamlin, a CMS catechist on the southern shores of the Manukau, he assembled a number of chiefs (probably at Awhitu), but failed to get their agreement.
On 20 March a second meeting was held. Many Waikato chiefs were present, including the great chief Te Wherowhero. None would sign; but three Ngati Whatua chiefs did. Symonds then sent the treaty copy to the Wesleyan missionary John Whiteley at Kawhia who, with his assistant James Wallis, obtained further signatories; the last name was added on 3 September 1840.
Each name has the prefix 'Ko', which is not part of the name, and has 'his mark' following the moko or mark.
