I've been asked to locate any details about the following topic. In the 1960s or 1970s someone caused an outrage amongst the locals by referring to the smell of Lake Rotorua as being like an unflushed toilet. Does anyone have any clues about the possible source of this reference? |

Hi
I believe raw sewerage was pumped into Lake Rotorua for a number of years, before there was an outcry because the lake was getting so disgusting. so that could be behind a comment like that? |

Just an update to this question. In a review of the book 'The Rake's progress : the NZ economy since 1945' by John Gould, the reviewer writing for the Journal of Economic Literature mentions that 'beautiful Lake Rotorua has been described as a huge unflushed toilet'. |
