Edward Jerningham Wakefield (1820-79). Edward Jerningham was the son of Edward Gibbon Wakefield, the prime mover behind immigration schemes from Britain to New Zealand in the late 1830s and 1840s. Edward Jerningham was MP for Christchurch Country (1853-5), and Christchurch City East (1871-5). Most people, including his father, thought him talented and intelligent, but in the end a reckless failure.
