The First World War hero Bernard Freyberg was British-born but New Zealand-raised. He proved to be a charismatic and popular military leader who would later serve a term as Governor-General.
Having retired from the British army due to health issues in 1937, Freyberg offered his services to the New Zealand government on the outbreak of the Second World War. He was appointed to command the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force and its fighting arm, the 2nd New Zealand Division, leading their campaigns in Greece, North Africa and Italy.
