Devonport Ferry terminal during 1913 strike

Mounted special constables guard the Auckland offices of the Devonport Steam Ferry Company during the 1913 strike. From 8 November special constables were in control of the Auckland wharves, including this terminal where passengers embarked for Devonport. The ferries continued to run throughout the strike.

On 4 November, before the specials had seized control of the wharves, there was an incident at the Devonport jetty, where carters had loaded cargo on to the Hirere. Strikers forced them to unload the cargo, under threat of being thrown into the harbour.

Devonport South African War peace memorial

Devonport South African War peace memorial.

Devonport has two distinct South African War memorials in different locations at the foot of the town centre: a concrete-and-tile fountain with a bronze centrepiece statue and a curved metal arch topped by a gas (now electric) lamp.

This South African memorial celebrates peace and is a metal arch with lamp above railed concrete steeps leading from the seaside walkway along the northern shore of Waitematā Harbour down to the beach below Devonport’s town centre.

Seven New Zealand South African War memorials featured lamps, which were symbolic of eternal life and lit pathways. They were also a beacon attracting people to them.

Devonport South African War memorial

Devonport South African War memorial fountain.

The fountain’s inscribed marble tablet commemorates the death of James Peard Mays (NZ Artillery) and Harold Frankham (4th New Zealand Contingent). The memorial was paid for by subscription and unveiled by the Mayoress, Mary Alison, on 3 June 1903. Running water and fountains symbolised eternal life. The memorial has since gained an extra life as a tribute to a local councillor.

Royal New Zealand Navy memorial, Devonport

The Royal New Zealand Navy memorial at Devonport, Auckland.

The memorial lists the names of 352 officers and men of the Royal New Zealand Navy, Royal New Zealand Naval Reserve and Royal New Zealand Naval Vounteer Reserve who died in all parts of the world during the Second World War and who have no known grave. Most were lost or buried at sea, although the memorial also honours some who died in Japanese captivity. Almost half of those commemorated were serving on the British cruiser HMS Neptune, which sank after striking mines in the Mediterranean on 19 December 1941 - a tragedy that claimed more than 750 lives, including 150 New Zealanders.

The memorial includes the names of Able Seaman A.C.H Shaw from Rotorua and Ordinary Seaman I.W. Grant from Dunedin, who were the only New Zealanders killed during the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939.
