These were all tribes noted for their loyalty to the Crown. Their tribal elders were influenced by ideals of patriotic service and the obligations of citizenship inherent in their ancestors' signed commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi. Naming them was an expression of honour and also an implied criticism of those not mentioned.
Maori and the First World War conscription maori in war tainui te puea waikato ww1 Thu, 01 Jan 1970 12:00:00 +1200 3129 at http://www.nzhistory.net.nz The Waikato-Tainui claim - the Treaty in practice /politics/treaty/the-treaty-in-practice/waikato-tainui
Legacy of war: settling the Waikato-Tainui claim

Hone Heke felling British flagstaff at Kororāreka

Robert FitzRoy, c 1860

land claims new zealand wars tainui te kingitanga The Treaty in practice treaty of waikato waikato Thu, 01 Jan 1970 12:00:00 +1200 2651 at http://www.nzhistory.net.nz Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu /meda/photo/te-arikinui-dame-te-atairangikaahu /meda/photo/te-arikinui-dame-te-atairangikaahu#comments king movement Maori King movement origins tainui te atairangikaahu te kingitanga waikato photos Thu, 01 Jan 1970 12:00:00 +1200 2125 at http://www.nzhistory.net.nz Maori King Tawhio's residence, Whatiwhatihoe /media/photo/the-kings-residence-pirongia
Tawhiao's residence at Whatiwhatihoe, under Mt Pirongia.

Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
Reference: C.010004
Permission of Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, must be obtained before any re-use of this image.

/media/photo/the-kings-residence-pirongia#comments king movement Maori King movement - 1860-94 pirongia tainui tawhiao te kingitanga The Treaty in practice waikato photos Thu, 01 Jan 1970 12:00:00 +1200 2563 at http://www.nzhistory.net.nz Eva Rickard /media/photo/eva-rickard
Maori rights campaigner Eva Rickard dancing at Moutoa Gardens (Pakaitore), Wanganui.
