There they are for everyone to see, bless 'em. At every wayside station the children wait in loyalty and excitement. The Queen is journeying from the West Coast to Canterbury, right across the South Island - a magic carpet for every watching child.'
/media/video/royals-on-the-west-coast#comments Royal Visit of 1953-54 arthurs pass royalty trains westport video Thu, 01 Jan 1970 12:00:00 +1200 1852 at http://www.nzhistory.net.nz Film clip: miniature train at the Centennial Exhibition /media/video/film-clip-miniature-train

Film clip: miniature railway

Still shots and description

'Miniature Railway'. The camera pans along a dark blue locomotive engine. But this isn't a full-size engine, it is part of the Exhibition's miniature railway. The film cuts to show a small aircraft landing on the other side of a fence - showing just how close the exhibition is to the Wellington Airport. Next we watch the train snaking around the curving corners towards us. A small white dog scampers beside it, trying to out-run the train. The carriages are open so that the passengers have a good view of the sights. We watch the train from another angle, and see that the carriages have white stripes on them. Spectators huddle around the track, watching as the train goes by. The clip closes with a scene of a crowd, who are perhaps waiting for their turn on the miniature train.
/media/video/film-clip-miniature-train#comments The 1940 Centennial centennial exhibition kupe trains video Thu, 01 Jan 1970 12:00:00 +1200 431 at http://www.nzhistory.net.nz Rise and fall - the North Island main trunk line /culture/main-trunk-line/rise-and-fall
Up and running

Hear about the North Island main trunk line

This clip requires Flash Player 7 or higher. Download latest version of Flash Player.

This clip requires Flash Player 7 or higher. Download latest version of Flash Player.

This clip requires Flash Player 7 or higher. Download latest version of Flash Player.
The North Island main trunk line food meals overlander railway stations railways refreshments taumarunui trains transport Thu, 01 Jan 1970 12:00:00 +1200 2463 at http://www.nzhistory.net.nz Tangiwai train wreckage /media/photo/tangiwai-train-wreckage /media/photo/tangiwai-train-wreckage#comments Tangiwai disaster disasters railways tangiwai trains Responding to tragedy photos Thu, 01 Jan 1970 12:00:00 +1200 1532 at http://www.nzhistory.net.nz Police by Tangiwai train wreckage /media/photo/police-by-tangiwai-train-wreckage /media/photo/police-by-tangiwai-train-wreckage#comments Tangiwai disaster disasters police railways tangiwai trains Responding to tragedy photos Thu, 01 Jan 1970 12:00:00 +1200 1537 at http://www.nzhistory.net.nz Train crossing Chasm Creek bridge, 1903 /media/photo/train-over-chasm-creek-bridge
Photographer Henry Winkelmann captured this 'mixed train' (featuring both freight and passenger carriages) crossing Chasm Creek bridge in 1903.
