It contains more New Zealand First World War graves than any other cemetery. Tyne Cot occupies part of the strategic high ground from which the Germans looked down across the Allied forces and is a historic site from the Battle of Passchendaele.

Within its flint walls are the graves of almost 12,000 casualties from the First World War, 8300 of them unidentified. The entire rear of the cemetery is occupied by a curved Memorial to the Missing, commemorating a further 35,000 soldiers who have no known graves. In total the cemetery covers an area of 34,941 square metres.

There are 520 graves of New Zealanders, 322 unidentified. The New Zealand Apse in the memorial commemorates 1176 New Zealanders who have no known grave. In addition, there is another New Zealand Memorial to the Missing in the immediate vicinity – at Buttes, Polygon Wood, close to Zonnebeke. A third is at Messines.

The New Zealand names on the Tyne Cot Memorial and other New Zealand memorials to the missing are the result of a New Zealand government decision at the time to honour the country's dead close to the point where they fell. War cemeteries in Belgium and hundreds of memorials back in New Zealand serve as permanent reminders of the terrible toll of 1917.

Dealing with death

Battlefield funerals

In 1914 most New Zealanders made sense of the costs of war through the idea of the good Christian death. The consolation and ritual within this, though, could not prepare people for the scale and manner of death experienced on the Western Front. The great distances separating New Zealand soldiers from their families and communities back home added to the difficulties of dealing with grief.

When a soldier was killed, his comrades formed the primary circle of mourners. Back in New Zealand, the grief of mourning families was compounded by the absence of a body or funeral. In the case of those reported missing, families faced an agonising wait for news of their loved ones’ fate. More ...

Buried in Belgian soil

War cemeteries

More than 4600 New Zealand servicemen are buried or commemorated in around 80 cemeteries in Belgium, which are situated close to where men fell in battle. We will never know the circumstances of his death. Did he fall advancing towards the enemy after going over the top in one of the periodic big pushes or in the darkness and confusion of a minor trench raid? Did some random shell burst instantly snuff out his life or did he lie in agony for hours, even days, before his shattered body gave up the struggle to survive?

We do know that his body was found without any form of identification other than some indication that he was a New Zealander, perhaps a fragment of his uniform. He was buried in one of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries that dot the now peaceful countryside of northern France. His simple white headstone carried the words A New Zealand soldier of the Great War Known unto God. It was one of many such unidentified graves on the Western Front, for the unknown soldier was one of the sad features of the Great War.

The idea that victims of war should be honoured in named graves is a relatively recent development. From the dawn of time, those who fell in battle could expect only the anonymity of the mass grave – if they were buried at all. Only in the nineteenth century did the idea of recovering bodies and burying them individually emerge in Western countries.

In the Great War this was no easy task. The nature of the battlefields often made identifying fallen soldiers difficult, if not impossible. In the close quarters fighting on the Gallipoli Peninsula opportunities to bury men who fell between the lines were limited. After the evacuation, three years would elapse before the Allies could return to the battlefield and seek out their dead. The Turks in the meantime had buried some in mass graves; others, buried during the fighting, lay in long lost temporary graves; others again lay where they fell in the scrub. On the Western Front the graves of many soldiers who had been buried were lost as the front advanced or receded, and shellfire pulverized the burial areas. When these men's bodies were found later they were usually unidentifiable. They became unknown soldiers.

But many of the fallen were never found at all. They may have disappeared altogether – blown to pieces by the huge shells that ravaged the modern battlefield. Or they may have been swallowed up by the earth, buried by a shell's or mine's explosion or sucked under by the mud of the quagmire created by incessant shellfire and destroyed water courses.

Memorials to the missing commemorate all those who have no known grave – both those whose bodies were recovered but never identified and those who disappeared altogether. The most imposing are at Thiepval in France, Tyne Cot and the Menin Gate in Belgium, and Cape Helles at Gallipoli. With their column after column of names, each representing a private agony and a grief-stricken family, these bleak monuments of pain are a stark reminder of the cost of war.

New Zealand lost 2721 men at Gallipoli and 12,483 on the Western Front. Of these 67 per cent and 33 per cent respectively disappeared, were recovered but not identified, or were buried at sea after dying of wounds suffered at Gallipoli. All these men are commemorated on separate national memorials to the missing – four at Gallipoli and seven in France and Belgium.

In the Second World War, soldiers were still threatened with obliteration by high explosives. But more mobile warfare ensured that conditions at the front lines were less conducive to men going missing on land than they had been in the Great War. At the same time, many more New Zealanders fought at sea or in the air, arenas in which few could expect a named grave if killed. Many went down with their ships or were buried at sea. Those whose aircraft crashed at sea were mostly not recovered; nor were many of those who crashed on land. In all, 2892 New Zealand servicemen and women who died during the Second World War – of a total 11,625 – are commemorated on memorials to the missing.

Fortunately no sacrifice on this scale has been demanded of New Zealand servicemen and women since 1945. In a series of wars and peace enforcement operations in Asia, less than a hundred New Zealanders have fallen in battle. Only two have no known grave. Seamen lost during the Korean War, they are commemorated on a memorial to the missing at the UN cemetery in Pusan, South Korea.

New Zealand Service Personnel Killed On Operational Service – 20th Century

South African War (1899-1902)

230

First World War (1914-1918)

18,166

Second World War (1939-1945)

11,625

Korean War (1950-1953)

43

Malaya/Malaysia (1948-1966

20

Vietnam War (1964-1972)

40

Peacekeeping operations (1990-2002)

6

TOTAL

30,360

4484 at http://www.nzhistory.net.nz

Unknown warriors

The Unknown New Zealand Warrior interred at the National War Memorial in Wellington lost his life in France some time between April 1916 and November 1918.

War graves

One of the countless victims of the 'war to end all wars', he died on the Western Front, a vast arena of misery and suffering in which New Zealanders were slaughtered in unprecedented numbers. Did he fall advancing towards the enemy after going over the top in one of the periodic big pushes or in the darkness and confusion of a minor trench raid? It was on the Somme that the majority of New Zealanders were killed or wounded during the First World War. And it was here that New Zealand experienced its worst days in military history in terms of loss of life. The Battle of the Somme was New Zealand's first major engagement on the Western Front. It took a huge toll on the 15,000 members of the New Zealand Division who were involved. Roughly one in seven of the division who fought on the Somme was killed, and about four in every ten were wounded.

Over the top

The New Zealand Division was part of XV Corps of the British Fourth Army. New Zealand's Somme experience began on 12 September 1916 when the artillery went into action. Three days later, on 15 September, it was the infantry's turn. By midnight on the 14th, the New Zealand Division was in place in their trenches around High and Delville woods. Morale was high, but the soldiers did not know what to expect, 'and perhaps it was just as well that we did not'. The Somme would be a very different battle from the one New Zealanders had fought on Gallipoli in the previous year. Poison-gas shells, relentless artillery fire and a highly professional opposition took a physical and psychological toll.

The New Zealand Division went over the top at 6.20 a.m. on 15 September. About 6000 of them saw action that day, and although nothing went quite to plan, by nightfall the Division had secured their immediate objectives and had assisted in taking the village of Flers.

It was an expensive victory, like so many in this war. Some 1200 men of the division were wounded or missing, and about 600 were dead. Among the casualties were 52 members of the Pioneer Battalion (which included the Maori Contingent) who were building vital communication trenches under heavy artillery fire. At the time, it was the single worst day in New Zealand's military history in terms of loss of life, but in the following year, it would be surpassed by the horrors of Passchendaele.

VC on the Somme

Among the more than 2000 New Zealanders who died on the Somme was Sergeant Donald Forrester Brown (1890–1916). He was the only member of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force to receive a Victoria Cross for action in 1916. On the opening day of New Zealand's Somme campaign – 15 September – and again on 1 October, Brown captured key German machine-gun positions, and this enabled the New Zealand forces to push through the lines. According to the official citation for his VC, Brown's 'utter contempt for danger and coolness under fire' helped keep up the morale of his companions. During the action on 1 October, he was hit in the head by fire from a long-range machine-gun and killed. Brown is buried in the Warlencourt British Military Cemetery in France.

On the front line

The gains made on 15 September were not the breakthrough that the Allied command had hoped for. That would never occur in this campaign, but in the following three weeks the New Zealand Division went into action again and again – on 16, 25 and 27 September and finally on 1 October. On each occasion the division did its job but with losses each time.

Cold and miserable

'We were reduced to a miserable condition, with deep mud everywhere and no greatcoats or blankets. For night after night ... we hardly slept. Sleep was a matter of bits and pieces amounting to very little. One night there was a thin cover of ice on a path beside us. We thought with longing of fires, dry clothes and hot baths. We became unspeakably weary, dreary and sick of it all.'

Sergeant Major Cecil Malthus, from Andrew Macdonald, On my way to the Somme

Sometimes the soldiers spent more than 24 hours under fire in the front line. Sickness spread, morale plummeted, and men wondered what they were becoming: 'I shook off our conditioned callousness, shook off the feeling, now taking root, that this world of arbitrary violence and random death was the real world, and that justice, mercy, peace and love were phantasms that had never been.' Cold was added to exhaustion and, once the rain began on 16 September, a wetness that soaked to the bone.

There was still no sign of the Germans cracking when the New Zealand Division began to be withdrawn from the line in early October. For the soldiers, the end of the battle could not come soon enough. Rifleman Sidney Gully described some of his fellow soldiers as 'half demented during the last couple of days. Unshaven, unwashed, covered in mud and lastly but leastly almost devoid of energy and only half fed'.

Remembering the Somme

New Zealand's losses on the Somme were felt for years to come. One casualty there meant mourning or suffering for entire families and communities at home. For these men were more than soldiers; they were also sons, fathers, brothers, husbands and lovers. To this day, countless families and communities in New Zealand carry scars on their hearts, going back to the bloody battlefields of the Somme.

More than 2000 New Zealanders lie buried on what was once the battlefield of the Somme. Their known graves are cared for by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Over half of the members of the New Zealand Division who died on the Somme have no known grave. The names of over 1200 men are inscribed on the New Zealand Memorial to the Missing in the Caterpillar Valley Cemetery west of the village of Longueval. Cemeteries throughout the area contain the graves of New Zealand soldiers: Dartmoor Cemetery, Warlencourt British Cemetery, Bulls Road Cemetery – the list goes on.

It is almost certain that New Zealand's Tomb of the Unknown Warrior at the National War Memorial contains the remains of one New Zealand soldier killed on the Somme in 1916. The remains were interred in the tomb in November 2004.

Amongst the 74 bells of The Carillon at New Zealand's National War Memorial are several relating to the Somme offensive of 1916. Their names echo the places where the New Zealand Division fought and fell in 1916: Delville Wood, Flers, Longueval and High Wood. The bell 'The Somme' is there too, dedicated 'To the Glorious Memory of The New Zealand Division, 1916–18'.

2456 at http://www.nzhistory.net.nz

It was on the Somme that the majority of New Zealanders were killed or wounded during the First World War, and it was here that New Zealand experienced its worst days in military history in terms of loss of life.

Soldier's grave in South Africa /media/photo/a-soldiers-grave-south-africa

Gunner C.
