No other event has killed so many New Zealanders in so short a space of time. While the First World War claimed the lives of more than 18,000 New Zealand soldiers over a four-year period, the second wave of the 1918 influenza epidemic killed almost 8600 people in less than two months.
/culture/1918-influenza-pandemic/death-rates#comments death disease epidemic health influenza maori health pandemic The 1918 influenza pandemic Thu, 01 Jan 1970 12:00:00 +1200 12847 at http://www.nzhistory.net.nz Maori nurses /media/photo/maori-nurses /media/photo/maori-nurses#comments Life in the 20th century maori health nursing photos Thu, 01 Jan 1970 12:00:00 +1200 1762 at http://www.nzhistory.net.nz Response to the influenza pandemic /culture/1918-influenza-pandemic/response
death disease epidemic health influenza maori health pandemic The 1918 influenza pandemic Thu, 01 Jan 1970 12:00:00 +1200 12848 at http://www.nzhistory.net.nz Aftermath - 1918 influenza pandemic /culture/1918-influenza-pandemic/aftermath

Robert Makgill

Following the pandemic speculation continued over the Niagara's involvement in bringing the virus to New Zealand.
