In this game the All Whites slipped to their only defeat in 15 World Cup qualifying matches. After the referee awarded the visitors two penalties for handball, a youthful spectator ran onto the pitch and threw a soft-drink can at the official. The New Zealand Football Association was subsequently fined by FIFA for that incident and other crowd disturbances.

This programme also highlights tobacco sponsorship, which was common at this time. Sport and smoking may have seemed an unlikely combination, but sporting bodies struggling for financial support often found the tobacco companies more than willing to inject much-needed funds into their competitions and activities. Victories in friendly matches against Australia (1979) and Mexico (1980) suggested that New Zealand might finally have a side capable of taking on the best in Oceania and Asia. Coach John Adshead and his assistant, Kevin Fallon, brought together a talented, hard-working squad. It included the experienced Brian Turner, Bobby Almond and Adrian Elrick, former English professionals Steve Sumner and Steve Wooddin, and younger players such as Grant Turner, Keith Mackay, Duncan Cole, Glenn Dods and Ricki Herbert.

The first round

New Zealand’s long road to Spain began on Anzac Day 1981 with a hard-fought 3–3 draw with Australia at Mount Smart Stadium, Auckland. An easy win in Fiji was followed by a frustrating, scoreless draw on a sub-standard pitch in Chinese Taipei (Taiwan). The team then beat Indonesia 2–0 in front of an intimidating 100,000-plus crowd in Jakarta. On 16 May the New Zealanders faced Australia in the decisive match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. A first-half goal from Wooddin and a towering header from Grant Turner sealed a comprehensive victory.

Game against Taiwan

Comfortable home wins over Indonesia, Taiwan and Fiji ensured New Zealand’s qualification for the next round at the expense of its trans-Tasman rival. In the last match, in August, New Zealand set a World Cup record by crushing Fiji 13–0, with captain Sumner scoring six goals. In their eight qualifying matches to date, the team had scored 31 goals and conceded just 3. With rugby’s reputation tarnished by that winter’s divisive Springbok tour, the All Whites – as they became known – were capturing the imagination of the sporting public.

The second round

But the road to Spain was about to get a whole lot tougher. New Zealand now entered the final Asian qualifying round with fellow group winners China, Saudi Arabia and a slick Kuwait side coached by Brazil’s Carlos Alberto Parreira. Only two would qualify. The All Whites started confidently, holding China to a 0–0 draw at Beijing’s packed Workers’ Stadium. The team then beat the Chinese 1–0, thanks to a header from Herbert, in front of 28,000 fans at Mount Smart. Goalkeeper Richard Wilson completed his ninth consecutive match without conceding a goal, which was a World Cup record.

Game against Kuwait

On 10 October, however, in front of an exuberant home crowd of more than 30,000, the All Whites slumped to a 2–1 defeat to Kuwait. The match was marred by controversial refereeing decisions and crowd disturbances, which briefly threatened to derail New Zealand’s campaign. A disappointing 2–2 home draw with Saudi Arabia the following month effectively meant the All Whites had to win their last two games in Kuwait City and Riyadh in December.

In Kuwait, goals from Sumner and teenager Wynton Rufer, the rising star of New Zealand football, looked to have secured a 2–1 victory. But the home team equalised in the last minute, seemingly dashing New Zealand’s World Cup hopes. The All Whites now faced the highly improbable task of beating Saudi Arabia by six goals in Riyadh to climb above China on goal difference. Playing in searing afternoon heat on a rock-hard artificial pitch, New Zealand swept to a stunning 5-0 lead by half-time, with the veteran Brian Turner holding his nerve to convert a vital penalty just before the break. Both sides had chances in the second spell, but there were no further goals.

Sudden death in Singapore

All Whites' home game against China, 1981

With New Zealand and China equal on points and sharing the same goal difference, the two sides met in a playoff in neutral Singapore on 10 January 1982. The prize was the 24th, and last, spot in that year’s World Cup finals in Spain. Despite the sapping humidity and an overwhelmingly pro-Chinese crowd of 60,000, the All Whites went 2–0 up with spectacular goals from Wooddin and Rufer. China pulled one back but the New Zealanders held on for a famous victory. Qualification was a triumph in itself, but there was more to come. New Zealand was about to take its place on foobtall’s biggest stage.

What’s in a name?

The New Zealanders earned the nickname All Whites on the road to Spain because of the colour of their playing strip and the name’s obvious link to the famous All Blacks rugby brand. But in their first game, against Australia, the New Zealanders wore white shirts and black shorts, a combination the national football team had used for years. For their next match, in Fiji, they wore a light blue change strip to distinguish their uniform from the local team's.

The all-white uniform didn’t appear until the side reached Taiwan. It was then used for every match of the campaign, prompting media and fans to embrace the name All Whites. But it occasionally caused confusion overseas, where some thought the name had racist overtones – an unfortunate association at a time when the All Blacks had just completed their controversial series with the apartheid-era South African Springboks.

4706 at http://www.nzhistory.net.nz /culture/1982-soccer-world-cup/qualifying-rounds#comments
New Zealand’s long road to Spain began on Anzac Day 1981 with a hard-fought 3–3 draw with Australia at Mount Smart Stadium, Auckland.
Playing in the finals - 1982 Football World Cup /culture/1982-soccer-world-cup/the-finals-games

The 1982 World Cup finals

1982 World Cup logo

It would have been easy for the All Whites to approach the finals in Spain as if they had already won their own World Cup.

Qualifying had been an arduous achievement, and the team had fought back from the brink of elimination on numerous occasions. The number of teams competing in the finals had been increased to 24, and there was a fear that the gulf between the traditional powers of world football and the so-called minnows would lead to some lopsided results. New Zealand was determined not to be one of those letting the standards drop. The team was adamant that they were not in Spain for the sun and the sand.

The New Zealanders were given little hope against their opposition in Group 6, which was dubbed the ‘pool of death’. This group included the cup favourites Brazil, plus powerful sides from the Soviet Union and Scotland. Against opposition of this quality, anything less than a 100% effort could result in humiliating defeats. As testament to the professional attitude adopted by the team, captain Steve Sumner was fined for sleeping in and missing a team run prior to the first match. But the team’s preparations were disrupted when influential midfielder Grant Turner was injured in a practice match six days before the opening game and was ruled out of the tournament.

Steve Sumner at the 1982 Soccer World Cup

Team coach John Adshead showed there would be no room for sentiment when he announced the team to play Scotland. Goalkeeper Richard Wilson, ever-present in the qualifying stages, and veteran striker Brian Turner, who had scored nine times on the road to Spain, were both relegated to the bench.

Game 1: Scotland 5, New Zealand 2 (15 June, Malaga)

For New Zealand football fans raised on a diet of British football through TV shows such as Big league soccer or publications such as Shoot magazine, Scotland was a mouth-watering opponent. This was a side packed with players from famous clubs such as Liverpool, Celtic and Nottingham Forest – up against men from Miramar Rangers, Invercargill Thistle and Gisborne City.

In front of 36,000 fans at Malaga’s Estadio La Rosaleda, New Zealand’s fairy tale appeared to be turning into a nightmare. Aberdeen’s dynamic Gordon Strachan set up Liverpool’s Kenny Dalglish and John Wark of Ipswich Town (who scored twice) as the Scots swept to a 3–0 half-time lead. But as Strachan tired in the second half, the game was turned on its head.

New Zealand pulled back two goals with strikes from Sumner and Steve Wooddin. At 3–2 just after the hour mark, it was game on. Adshead believed that for 10 minutes they had the Scots worried. But in the end Scotland pulled away with further goals to Nottingham Forest’s John Robertson and Tottenham’s Steve Archibald. The All Whites had certainly proved they were not here just to make up the numbers.

Game 2: Soviet Union 3, New Zealand 0 (19 June, Malaga)

The Soviet Union was regarded as the second strongest team in Europe, and featured Oleg Blokhin, a former European footballer of the year. Some described the first half of this game as the ‘best first 45 minutes by a New Zealand team in international football’. But to use the most telling of football clichés, it is a game of two halves. And as the New Zealanders were about to find out, it can be a cruel game.

On 21 minutes Kenny Cresswell had a good opportunity, but his header was saved by the outstanding Soviet keeper Rinat Dassaiev. Instead of being a goal up, the All Whites fell behind three minutes later to a streaky goal by Yuri Gavrilov. His initial shot hit one of his own players, wrong-footing the New Zealand keeper, Frank van Hattum, but falling kindly for the Soviet striker to score at the second attempt. The All Whites went into half time-trailing 1–0.

Luck ran the Soviets’ way again in the second half when Ramaz Shengelia missed the ball in front of the goal only for it to run into the path of Blokhin. With the defence wrong-footed again, he made it 2–0. Sergei Baltacha completed the scoring on 67 minutes. The margin flattered the Soviets. New Zealand had been unlucky, but as Adshead conceded, if you don’t get ‘those breaks you suffer’. Now effectively eliminated from the tournament, New Zealand still had a game against the glamour side, Brazil, to look forward to.

Game 3: Brazil 4, New Zealand 0 (23 June, Seville)

While the Brazil game was a formality, the All Whites’ management were aware that anything less than a top performance could result in a defeat of embarrassing proportions. Consequently, they maintained a hard-nosed policy in terms of team selection.

The most telling example of this was the treatment of goalkeeper Richard Wilson. He had established a World Cup record during the qualifying rounds when he kept nine consecutive clean sheets, but in Spain he did not even get on the field. Adshead felt that van Hattum ‘looked sharper, keener and more aggressive in training’. Wilson had also at times clashed with the abrasive Fallon, which cast a cloud over Adshead’s explanation.

The Brazilians, with players of great attacking flair such as Zico, Socrates, Falcao and Eder, appeared on the verge of returning to the glory days of 1970 when they won the World Cup for the third time in emphatic style. They entered the tournament as favourites, and superb victories over the Soviets and Scots had only enhanced their reputation. They also chose to field a strong team for this final group match, played at Seville’s Estadio Benito Villamarín in front of 43,000 fans.

Zico's goal on YouTube

Brazil gave a dazzling display of attacking football. Zico opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a memorable overhead kick and added a second in his side’s 4–0 victory.
