Cup – had been presented to the New Zealand Football Association on 15 December 1922 by Captain C.B. Prickett on behalf of the crew of the Royal Navy cruiser HMS Chatham, as a mark of appreciation for the hospitality they received during the ship’s post-war tour of duty in New Zealand waters.

Only a small number of clubs entered the first competition in the winter of 1923. Qualifying was organised on a geographical basis, with the final to be a North vs South island affair (as it would be each year until 1970). Wellington YMCA defeated local rivals Waterside and Hospital (Porirua), then Nelson Wanderers, Dauber’s Motor Depot (Foxton) and finally Huntly in the North Island playoff. Seacliff had an easier route, crushing the only other South Island entrant, Oamaru Rangers, 7-0.

The final on 1 October was played in warm conditions and on a pitch described as being ‘like lightning’. According to the NZ Truth, the game was ‘a bright exhibition, with Seacliff always having the whip hand. The whole team played with machine-like precision, and it was a treat to see the way they combined.’

For Seacliff, 1923 was as good as it would get. The club reached the next two Cup finals but lost them both, including a 1925 rematch with Wellington YMCA. The southerners would be runners up again in 1929.

The Chatham Cup has been contested every year since 1923, except 1937 and 1941-44. The most successful clubs in the competition’s history have been Auckland’s Mount Wellington (now University-Mount Wellington) with seven wins, and North Shore and Christchurch United with six each. For most of the 20th century the cup final was held in Wellington, with the Basin Reserve hosting 52 matches.

Image: Chatham Cup (Wikipedia)

51255 at http://www.nzhistory.net.nz /page/first-chatham-cup-football-final#comments
At Athletic Park, Wellington, Seacliff from Otago defeated Wellington YMCA 4-0 in the first final of the Chatham Cup, New Zealand football’s oldest and best-known national club competition.
 Wellington's 'Cake Tin' - roadside stories /media/video/wellingtons-cake-tin-roadside-stories

Wellington's Westpac Stadium – known affectionately as the 'Cake Tin' – opened in 1999 to replace the former rugby venue of Athletic Park. Rugby was first played at Athletic Park in 1896, and it was the site of some memorable games, including two All Black tests against France in hurricane-strength winds. The new stadium boasts a less exposed, more central position, and seating for more than 34,000.

Transcript

Narrator: The site of the Rugby World Cup Games in Wellington is Westpac Stadium. Opened in 1999, the Cake Tin, as the modern stadium is known outside Wellington, is a popular venue. Its central location near the city’s railway station means that it is easily accessible.

Before the Westpac Stadium was built, Wellington’s main rugby venue was Athletic Park. It was located in the suburb of Berhampore, close to the southern coast. During the winter months, the chilling Wellington southerly could whip up Cook Strait and over Athletic Park, making conditions particularly unpleasant for players and fans.

Rugby was first played at Athletic Park in 1896. During the twentieth century, it hosted some memorable rugby games, often due to the weather. The 1961 All Black test against France was played in hurricane-force winds of around 140 kilometres an hour. With scores level, Don ‘The Boot’ Clarke had to attempt a conversion from near the touch line with a swirling wind behind him.

Don Clarke (actor's voice): Believing the conversion was impossible, I simply kicked out along the 25-yard line, and left the rest to the wind. To my astonishment it went over. I take no credit for that kick. It was a fluke.

Narrator: The wind swung the ball at right angles to fly between the posts for perhaps the most improbable conversion in all test history. But it was enough to give the All Blacks a 5-3 win.

In 1968, the All Blacks again played France in hurricane-force winds. Playing with the wind, France was awarded a penalty well inside their own half. When fullback Pierre Villepreux lined up the shot at goal, local fans laughed.. But the ball sailed between the posts. Estimated to be a 65-metre kick, it remains one of the most famous long-range penalties of all time.

Other famous games at Athletic Park included the All Blacks’ series-winning victory over the touring British Lions in 1950, and their 43-6 win over Australia in the very first Tri-Nations test in 1996.

However, facilities at Athletic Park were outdated. It was finally agreed that a new stadium be built on surplus land in Wellington’s railyards. In 1999 Athletic Park was closed and replaced by the Westpac Stadium.

The Westpac Stadium has modern facilities with seating for over 34,000 fans, with over two-thirds of the seats covered. In its short history, the Cake Tin has already been the site of many epic sports games.

In 2000, lock John Eales, standing over six-and-a-half feet tall, kicked a beautiful last-minute penalty to ensure Australia retained the Bledisloe Cup and won the Tri-nations Series that year.

But the most famous game at the Cake Tin so far did not involve rugby. In 2009 the New Zealand national soccer team, the All Whites, played Bahrain in the second leg of their qualifying game for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The stadium was packed to capacity with most fans wearing white. A headed goal by Rory Fallon was enough to send the crowd into a frenzy and the All Whites to South Africa. At the World Cup, the All Whites were unbeaten, with draws against Slovakia, Italy, and Paraguay.

As well as hosting rugby tests, the Westpac Stadium hosts cricket and rugby league games and is the home of the Wellington Phoenix soccer team. Every February, the stadium is the site of the NZI International Sevens which has become famous for the incredible array of costumes that fans wear. The Cake Tin has also been the venue for concerts by the Rolling Stones, Elton John, AC/DC and Neil Diamond.

Manatū Taonga - Ministry for Culture and Heritage, 2011. The team was the first from this country to make it to the finals of the sport’s premier international tournament. Local football fans had to wait 27 long years before another New Zealand team reached the finals by defeating Bahrain 1–0 in a two-legged qualification play-off in 2009.

The ‘All Whites’, as the team became known, had begun their campaign with a 3–3 draw against Australia in Auckland on 25 April, followed by wins in Fiji and Indonesia and a draw in Taiwan. The rematch between the trans-Tasman rivals at the famous Sydney Cricket Ground would effectively decide which team progressed to the second qualifying round against the three Asian group winners. A first-half strike from Steve Wooddin and a thunderous long-range header from combative midfielder Grant Turner sealed a comprehensive win, and convinced many New Zealand soccer fans that we finally had a team capable of competing on the world stage.

The All Whites would have to play a further 10 games, culminating with a heart-stopping play-off victory over China in Singapore, to clinch qualification.
