As noted below, Peter Edward William Lehrs is actually an alias used by William Foss. Lehrs was a real person, but he did not serve in South Africa.

It appears that he was killed in a train accident in South Africa in April 1902. See his death notice and a report of this incident (PapersPast)
I think this is the alias for William Foss. It would be nice to know that such information is corrected once found out as the real Peter Edward William Lehrs father had died before his birth and Timothy Kerin (not Lehrs) was his step-father.
