Rugby jerseys drying

Rugby jerseys and shorts are strung out on two washing lines held up by rough wooden poles. Each jersey has a white square on the back with the number in black — these numbers represent the position played by the wearer. The washing hangs over a roughly mowed strip of lawn adjacent to an old wooden house in a hillside suburb.

Men in a chariot race at the Piha Surf Club carnival

An action photograph showing three teams of human chariot racers running along a beach. The teams consist of two rows of three men bound with their arms over their shoulders and some sort of harness: the front row are running upright while those behind are bent over and holding on to swimming trunks of the front row. The 'rider' balances on the backs of the second row of men and leans over so his hands pull on the harness on the backs of the front row. The men are all wearing 1930s-style swimming trunks, most of which include belts around the waist.

Sybil Lupp, c. 1957

Sybil Lupp, then in her early forties, is working under the bonnet of a Jaguar car parked in a garage or workshop. We can see some tools and a portable electric light as well as a Lucas battery and other parts of the engine. She is wearing very clean white overalls and her hair is tied up in a bun. She has a scarf tied around her neck and wears gloves. She is looking at the camera with a slight smile on her face.
