Can you help? - Auckland memorials

On this page we will post references to memorials in the Auckland region which people have told us about, but for which we have no official records or images.

Please email us at [email protected] if you can help with images or more information about these memorials.

Great Barrier Island

'I would like to advise that there is a memorial for WW1 Soldiers on Great Barrier Island.  These consist of a framed memorial picture/plaque.  There was one put in each of the 3 schools.  I know one was in the old Hall at the airfield and when that was dismantled the plaque went into a little local shop at Claris.  I'm not sure where it is now.  I dont know the whereabouts of the others but maybe one is in the Tryphena hall.

The ones that were killed had their photo on the plaque.'

Information from the Maunkau City Council

Thanks to Bruce Ringer from the Manukau City Council for sending in this information about memorials missing from the register.

Once we have some images of these memorials we will be able to add them to the main register (if you can help, please email [email protected]). The dates after each memorial refer to relevant Council records for that memorial. Bruce writes:

'As far as I can ascertain, the list omits:

(a) Cenotaphs, obelisks, etc.

  • Buckland [nr. Tuakau] (n/k)
  • Whangarata (15/9/24).

(b) Buildings

  • Franklin Memorial Hospital (28/4/23)

(c) School and church memorials?

  • Christ Church war Memorial Sanctuary, Papakura (4/8/23)
  • Otahuhu Primary School gates (17/10/25)
  • King's College Chapel (25/4/25), etc.

(d) Trees, memorial avenues, etc?

  • These have mostly disappeared, but a memorial oak tree still survives in Central Park, Papakura (19/7/19).'

In my PhD thesis on NZ pipe organ building I have referred to a number of pipe organs which were built and dedicated as war memorials. If it is of interest I could make a provisional list.

What do you know?
