Neazor makes a decent case for Wellington's best year being 1920, but I reckon 1981 was better. Clearly the best team in the country, with attacking talent to burn and solid forwards like Brian McGrattan, Murray Mexted and co, they won the NPC handily, defeated Scotland 19-15, and took the Shield off Waikato (never an easy task) on a sunny Hamilton day at the end of the season, 22-4 (a thrashing in those days). The team also supplied some of the crucial players in the All Blacks who defeated the Boks that year - Mexted who drove the ball forward at Eden Park which led to Gary Knight's try, Stu Wilson who ran in a couple of tries (one from a beautiful cutback run when playing at centre in the first test at Lancaster Park), and Hewson who kicked the winning penalty at Eden Park and laid off the pass that Wilson scored from (albeit also dropping the high ball that led to one of Ray Mordt's tries).
