John Crawford with Ellen Ellis, To Fight For The Empire: An Illustrated
History of New Zealand and the South African War, 1899-1902
Reed Publishing, in association with the Historical Branch, Department
of Internal Affairs, 1999
New Zealand sent nearly 6500 troops to the South African War, along with 8000 horses (almost all of which died there), and a medical contingent. Local communities raised over £100,000 for the war effort. Two hundred and thirty New Zealanders died in this war which has been overshadowed by two World Wars. Heavily illustrated with photographs and other images from collections around the country, many of which are published for the first time, this book traces New Zealand's involvement in the South African War. John Crawford is Deputy Director of History with the New Zealand Defence Force; Ellen Ellis is a freelance researcher and historian. Order copies of this book directly from Reed
