The contributions in this book trace the Japan-New Zealand relationship from the mostly brief encounters of New Zealanders and Japanese in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, through the difficult war years, 1941-45, to the contemporary era. The last thirty years in particular have seen much change. Contacts between New Zealanders and Japanese have flourished, not least because of the increase in travel between the two countries. Japan has become a key partner in many spheres, whilst the development of Asia-Pacific cooperation in the 1990s, and Japan's significant role in this, has given new depth and importance to the relationship. |
