Biographical information provided for by Fiona Oliver for the He Tohu exhibition:
Mary was an independent businesswoman when she signed the petition at 76 Cuba St, Wellington. From those premises she ran an agency supplying servants to people requiring domestic help. By 1897 she had moved to Lambton Quay and was issued with a licence to conduct a servants’ registry office. Very little is known of Mary’s personal life; there is no record of a marriage, children or her death in New Zealand.
