16 June 1840Sheet 6 — The Bay of Plenty (Fedarb) Sheet

The Bay of Plenty (Fedarb) treaty sheet was signed by Ngāti Awa rangatira at Whakatāne on 16 June 1840. The majority of signatories were from the Ngāti Pūkeko hapū. There were a total of 12 signatories.

The trader James W. Fedarb, who was the trading master of the schooner Mercury, was responsible for the treaty sheet taken around the Bay of Plenty and had a signing at Pōhaturoa rock, Whakatāne. Robert Maunsell, an Anglican missionary who was based at Maraetai, Waikato heads, witnessed the signatures.

The gifts given out at Whakatāne included 11 fancy pipes, 4 ditto boxes, 3 looking glasses, 51lbs tobacco, 4 rows of beads and a slate

Since 1990, Ngāti Awa have had a dawn ceremony at Pōhaturoa rock every year on 16 June to commermorate the signing.
