4 June 1840Sheet 8 — The Cook Strait (Henry Williams) Sheet

The Ariel briefly returned south to Motungārara, a small island off the southern tip of Kapiti Island. Te Rangihīroa and Te Ohu were the last two signatures to be included on the Cook Strait (Henry Williams) copy of the Treaty of Waitangi. The missionaries Henry Williamsand Octavius Hadfield both witnessed these last signatures. The rangitira (chiefs) signed with detailed marks next to their names.

Williams plan was to continue south to the South Island but, on hearing that Major Bunbury had been dispatched to the South Island, Williams returned to Waimate North, arriving on 10 June accompanied by Te Āti Awa rangatira Wiremu Kīngi.
