Pūtiki marae memorial gates

The memorial gates at Pūtiki marae (often referred to as Pūtiki Pā) near Whanganui have two main pillars are inset with granite tablets inscribed as follows:

HEI TOHU AROHA TENEI / - / 1939-1945 / - / MO NGA TAMARIKI / I HINGA KI / TE PAE O / TE PAKANGA

and

PUTIKI-WHARANUI PA / MEMORIAL GATE / 1939-1945.

The latter tablet also lists the names of eight men from Ngāti Tūpoho and Ngāti Tūmango who gave their lives during the war: Sergeant Pine (Boy) Takarangi, RNZAF; Sergeant Arthur Jones, RNZAF; Private Matiu Bailey; H. Korako Takarangi; I. Te Kahu (Ivor) Whakarau; Teoteo (Joe) Emia; Paetahi (Pat) Mete-Kingi; Wireti P.K. Takarangi.
