Damaged truck in Greece

Image

A lucky escape. William Crawley (left) and Phillip Tritt from 27th (Machine Gun) Battalion alongside their bullet-ridden truck in Greece, April 1941. The pair had been near Grevena when they were attacked by German aircraft. German air superiority over Crete meant that Allied vehicles were equally vulnerable during the battle for that island in May.

Lance-Sergeant Tritt was killed in action in North Africa on 4 September 1942.
