Jack Lovelock after 'Mile of the Century'

Jack Lovelock surrounded by wellwishers after his victory over rivals Glen Cunningham and Bill Bonthron in the 'Mile of the Century' at the Princeton Invitational meeting, 15 June 1935.

In his scrapbook recording this race Lovelock said that after it he `was mobbed by "kind" but thoughtless enthusiasts, hundreds of whom appeared to want to slap me, none too gently, on any portion of my anatomy they could lay a finger on. It was really serious for they crowded round so closely that they were almost crushing and suffocating me'.
