Edward Jerningham Wakefield (1820–79) was the son of Edward Gibbon Wakefield, the prime mover behind immigration schemes from Britain to New Zealand in the late 1830s and 1840s. Edward Jerningham was Member of Parliament for Christchurch Country (1853–5) and, later, Christchurch City East (1871–5). Most people, including his father, thought him talented and intelligent but, in the end, a reckless failure.
