In 1840 more than 500 chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. Ngā Tohu, when complete, will contain a biographical sketch of each signatory.

Te Hīnaki signed the Treaty of Waitangi on 4 March 1840 at Karaka Bay, Tāmaki (Auckland). Historian Paul Monin has noted that Te Hīnaki was among the most important Ngāti Pāoa chiefs to sign the treaty.

An earlier Te Hīnaki died at the battle of Mokoia-Mauinaina in Tamaki in 1821.
